Holiday Greetings Comrades,
Post 8867 Members, Ladies and Men’s Auxiliaries have been busy since our last publication of the Newsletter. Our main work continues to be Veterans helping worthy Veterans.
The annual Labor Day picnic was well attended with family activities for children and adults. From face painting, moon walk and playground to horseshoes, dancing to DJ Reggie and camaraderie. Thanks go to members and both the Men’s and Ladies Auxiliaries. Planning, shopping, cooking and supervising activities required a lot of volunteer hours and coordination.
Our Color Guard has been active several times this quarter. Whether at Pt. Pleasant Beach, the grand re-opening of a Supercenter or their presence at the new Mayor and Council inauguration on New Year’s Day 2014, Co-captains Bob Miller and Bill Duffy and the entire Color Guard proudly represent Post 8867.
Post Remembrance events include POW/MIA 9/22/2013 sponsored by the Ladies Auxiliary and two Veterans Day ceremonies 11/11/2013, one at Town Hall and the other at the Post. In the address at Town Hall, I appealed to attendees to assist our older veterans in need and to help create jobs for our men and women in uniform returning from tours in Afghanistan and elsewhere. After our Post service Brick Police Benevolent Association provided breakfast for veterans and families. We appreciate the work done by Bob Shepherd, Mike Bevacqua and other PBA members in organizing the event.
Veteran’s Day activities also included Post 8867 co-sponsoring with VFW Post 4715 and Brick Library a book signing and lecture “Let Us Never Forget” Stories and paintings of WWII by author/painter Francis J. McGinley. Our Post members also attended breakfast and entertainment honoring Veterans at Veteran’s Memorial Middle School, “Honoring Our Heroes” at the Chelsea and a Tribute to Veterans at St. Peter School. On 12/7/2013 we remembered the attack and losses at Pearl Harbor. Our Post also attended N.J. Mission of Honor at Brig. Gen. Wm. C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery and helped sponsor 2013 Run for the Fallen. Whether providing holiday turkeys for Veteran’s families, stocking Wm. Reeves Pantry or delivering gifts to Vet Haven North, Post 8867 supports Veterans.
President Pete Pedersen and the Men’s Auxiliary sponsored a “Seafood Festival” in October. The sold out crowd feasted on lobsters, shrimp, clams, mussels, beef, corn, etc. Men’s and Ladies Auxiliaries and Post members take turns providing tasty and affordable dinners each Friday night, thanks to Pete, Diane Merfert and Hook. No reservations are needed, just be at the Canteen at 6 PM each Friday.
Future events include children’s and adult Christmas parties 12/14/2013 at 1 PM and 5 PM respectively, as noted in our August 2013 Newsletter. December 31st ring in the New Year at the Post with friends and joint sponsor American Legion Post 348. A.L. Cmdr. Skip Amundson, Bar Chairman Rich Kruysman, their wives and others have been busy assisting Mike Rubin, Hook and myself to make this the best New Year’s Eve Party ever. Youth Awards will be 1/20/14 at 7 PM and we hold another 65th Post Birthday celebration 2/23/2014 at 2 PM. New members will be inducted and receive VFW pins. I’m looking forward to seeing you.
Jack C. Russell, Commander
